UPPER MARLBORO, MD – In somewhat slick conditions due to Saturday rain, racers enjoyed a bit of mud at Rosaryville State Park this past Sunday at Tacchino CX, promoted by Squadra Coppi. The usual suspects were all over the front of the elite races, with the familiar faces of Cheryl Sornson (Rare Disease Cycling) and Wes Schempf (SEAVS/Haymarket p/b Van Dessel) notching consecutive wins in their last two Super 8 appearances.  Both riders maintain the lead in their respective Verge Sport leader’s jersey competitions as well.

Other notable rides came from Josh Townes (Rock Creek Velo) in the Junior 10-14 field, and Lindsey Crifasi (District Taco) in the Women’s 3/4 race, both adding to their 2014 win totals in their respective fields (UPGRADE ALERT).

The Bikereg.com Super 8 series is winding up for its big mid-series bash with a two-day event at the Armed Forces Reitrement Home for DCCX this weekend.  Come for the racing, come for the food and beer and other goodies, but do not miss it. You can catch a course preview at the link below.

As we head in to race six of the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Super 8 Cyclocross Series, the Verge Sport points competitions are really starting to hot up. Schooley Mill Cross, which goes down this Sunday, could be the race folks look back on as the one that turned tide in several categories. And in case you did not know, there is more to the points chase than those sweet looking Verge Sport jerseys. There is cold hard cash for the winners in the masters 1/2/3 35+, 45+ and 55 + fields, women and men elite fields, and single speed. Depending on the field, payouts go anywhere from five to 10 deep. Final points prizes will be awarded at Capital Cross Classic, the Super 8 finale.

Racers get 60 points for the win, 50 points for second place, 45 for third and on down the line. This means that a good showing by any of the riders near the top of the standings, or an off day by others could drastically change the outcome in most of the categories.

In the excitement of last week’s points update we failed to report on the womens 3/4 category. To make sure there is no repeat of that transgression, this week’s rundown starts with that very field. At the top is Emily McDonald (Momentum Racing) who holds a 35 point lead over Madi West (Adventures for the Cure). Amanda Gilbert is another 21 points back in third place. Laura Murray (Baltimore Bicycle Works) and Diedre Ribbens (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) are tied for fourth 70 points out of the top spot.

The womens elite field continues to be ruled by consistency. The top five riders, after five races have accounted for just two victories. Libbey Sheldon (Four Boys Racing) continues to lead the field with 221 points. Allyson Tufano (Sportif) remains in second with 175 points. Laurel Larsen (Syn-Fit) and Jennifer Maxwell (Van Dessel) are tied for third with 145 points and Elizabeth Harlow (C3) rounds out the top five with 134 points.

In the mens elite field, Ben Frederick (Team Traveller) remains in the lead despite his decision to end his season before last week’s Ed Sander Memorial Cross. Maybe he didn’t realize there is PRIZE MONEY on the line! Come on Ben. Three more races. Taking advantage of Frederick’s absence was Chris Beck (Team CF) who moved into a tie for second place with Jared Nieters (Haymarket Bicycles). A good showing at this Sunday’s Schooley Mill race could see Beck in the leader’s jersey. Or possibly, it could be Wes Schempf (C3), who put in a strong showing on Sunday and is ten points behind Beck and Nieters. Pat Blair (Adventures for the Cure) sits in fifth after suffering an untimely mechanical and DNF on Sunday.

Hey singlespeeders! It’s time to swap out that cog for something a little more robust and get back in the game. Because right now Bernie Shiao (Kelly Benefit Strategies) is running away with this competition. He holds a 95 point lead over Daniel Atkins (Trek 29er Crew). Pretty sure that means two guys on mountain bikes are sitting atop the field in a cyclocross series. Alexander Castro remains in third place. In fourth place, Jared Nieters, after winning the first two races in the series, seems to have pulled a Ben Frederick and hung up the one-by-one for the remainder of the season. Mike Esmonde (Raw Talent Ranch) rounds out the top five.

The masters men 35+ 1/2/3 field remains a close race between Paul Rades (Gam Jams/November Bicycles) and Dave Fuentes (Haymarket/Battley Harley). Rades has never finished lower than second the entire season and has ticked off two impressive back-to-back wins at DCCX and Ed Sander. Fuentes has been right behind Rades for the past two races and sits 45 points off the lead. Ron Huebner (Evolution Cycling) is in third with Jason Lins (Adventures for the Cure) and Jay Morali (Sportif Coaching) rounding out the top five.

In what remains the closest race in the series, the masters men 45+ 1/2/3  is definitely going to come down to the wire. Andrew Shaw (NCVC) holds the top spot with 240 points. Five points behind is Randall Root (Evolution Cycling) and another 35 points back is Marc Gwadz (DCMTB). In fourth spot at 180 points could be the spoiler to this party. Jerzy Wozniak has 180 points. He’s raced only three of the five series races but won all of them. If Jerzy shows up for the final three, the others in this field may be looking up at him by the time its’ all said and done at Lake Fairfax in early December. Shawn Downing slots into the fifth place spot with 168 points.

The masters men 55+ 1/2/3 field is another that is too close to call. Tony Bilotta (Van Dessel) remains in the lead but by missing the Ed Sander race he has allowed the field to move a bit closer. Peter Czapiewski (Arlington Master’s Velo Club) sits in second place 21 places off the lead. Fred Wittwer (ALAN), much like Jerzy in the 45+, has entered three of the five series races and won them all. If Fred finishes the season in the Super 8 he could be pocketing the most prize money in the field. William Feasley (DC Velo) is in fourth place with 165 points and Galen Wallace (Kelley Benefits) is in fifth.

In the mens 3/4 field Josh Doorly (Haymarket Bicycles/SEAVS) takes over the top spot from Kyle Murphy (The Bike Lane) who falls to second. Kimani Nielsen sits in third after an impressive Ed Sander win. These three racers are within 25 points of each other and all have a legitimate shot at the top spot. Chris Carraway (GamJams/November Bicycles) sits in fourth and Jared Janowiak (Gripped Racing) is fifth.

The masters men 35+ 3/4 field is topped by Sportif Coaching teammates Jon Hicks and Cory Smith. Chris King (Route1Velo/Arrow Bicycle) despite racing up holds enough early season points to remain in third place. Steve Fife (Bike Doctor) sits fourth and Luke Swift (NCVC) moves up to fifth after stepping up for the host team and winning Ed Sander.

In the Junior 15-18 field Matthew Ammann (NCVC) also took home the win at Ed Sander and in doing so broke the tie at the top with Tanner Browne (Bike Doctor) who falls to second place. Jake Thompson holds third place with Caleb Merriam (Four Boy Racing) and Nolan Yager (Rock Creek Velo) rounding out the top 5. In the junior women 15-18, Anastasiya Mack (Rock Creek Velo) holds a commanding lead. Svetlana Mack (Rock Creek Velo) remains atop the women 10-14 field while Evie Wolfe (Juggernaut) remains in second place. George Schulz is unstoppable in the men 10-14 field with five straight wins. Owen Brenneman (Keystone Velo Club) and Samuel Monaco (Sportif Coaching) are second and third.

The team standings remain close with C3-Charm City Cycling holding on to the top spot and Sportif Coaching one point behind in second. Four points farther behind is Adventures for the Cure. DCMTB and Route1Velo are tied for fourth.

Kill points are still being tabulated. We will post those with all of the other series standings at http://www.crossresults.com/?n=results&sn=mabra2011.

See you at Schooley Mill Cross.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

It’s no secret that cyclocross’ popularity in the Mid-Atlantic, and the nation, has exploded over the past decade. To meet the ever-growing need for autumnal skinny tire grass and dirt racing, MABRAcross, the Mid-Atlantic Bicycle Racing Association’s cyclocross arm has created something Super.

Super cool. Super exciting. Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus? Sure, why not. New for 2011 is the MABRAcross Super 8. An eight race series that promises to offer the Mid-Atlantic’s cyclocross community top notch events from September through December. Presented by BikeReg.com, the Super 8 series is committed to offering racers, families and spectators a day filled with the best racing and amenities available on the East Coast.

The new series will be the home of the highly sought after Verge Sport Leader’s Jersey, which added a whole new level of competition to the 2010 MABRAcross race calendar. Verge Sport is once again supplying its high-end cycling jerseys for 10 category leaders to show off at the front of their respective fields.

As for the calendar, every race is a must. Don’t waste your time checking off individual races. Just put a big red circle around the whole shebang, add a couple stars and smiley faces, and be done with it.

Kicking off the series in 2011 is Tacchino Cyclocross, one of the perennial big hitters in the Mid-Atlantic. The series then heads west for Winchester Apple Cross, a race that has received rave reviews and a big turnout since its 2009 debut. Hyattsville CX slots in the next week with its special blend of fast and technical racing. After a short break, the series is back with a vengeance with DCCX, the Super 8 big daddy. The Ed Sander Memorial Cyclocross finds a new home in the calendar but not in your heart, with its unique course and pastoral environs. The Howard County Double Cross may no longer happen on the same weekend but Schooley Mill Cross and Rockburn Cross will always go hand-in-hand to the MABRAcross faithful. These races, now on back-to-back weekends are “go time” in the Verge Sport points chase. The Capital Cross Classic marks its return to MABRAcross by hosting the Super 8 finale at its traditional Reston, Virginia, stomping grounds.

ELKRIDGE, MARYLAND, November 21, 2010 — Haymarket Bicycles/SEAVS completed its domination of the Howard County Double Cross elite races with two more top finishes at Rockburn Cross, race #9 in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross series. Jared Nieters, Haymarket boss and Verge Sport MABRAcross points leader, took the top spot for the elite men and Patty Buerkle capped off the weekend sweep by winning the women’s race.

Race organizer Adventures for the Cure had the Rockburn course dialed in and Mother Nature did her part to deliver another spectacular day for racing and spectating. With the MABRAcross series coming to a close, the Howard County Double Cross served as a make or break weekend. The time to once and for all weed out the pretenders from the contenders.

In the men’s elite race Wes Schempf (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) found himself in a familiar position: sandwiched between two Haymarket riders. But instead of having to chase Joe Dombrowski for an hour, it was Haymarket rider Stephen “Steevo” Cummings setting the early pace with teammate and Verge Sport points leader Jared Nieters slotted in behind Schempf. Steevo kept the pace high for the first third of the race before dropping to third as Schempf hit the front. The C3 rider went full out through the technical back section of the Rockburn cross but was unable to drop Nieters who eventually took the lead and the victory. Cummings fought back to second place giving Haymarket another one, two finish.

John Minturn (AXA CRCA) had a strong race to finish third. Pat Blair (Adventures for the Cure) traded in his race organizer cap for a cycling helmet and put in a great effort to finish fourth. Ryan Fawley (Trek Mtn Co-Op) held off the rest of the field to claim the final spot on the podium.

In the women’s elite race Patty Buerkle (Haymarket/SEAVS) took the holeshot and never looked back. She opened up a minute and a half lead on the field and coasted to her second win of the weekend and sixth in the series. Even with extra points available at next week’s MABRAcross championship, with this win, Buerkle clinched the final Verge Sport points leader jersey. Allyson Tufano (NVRC/Cardio Sports Lab) finished the day with a well-deserved second place. Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) finished third, Marni Harker (Team Kenda) took the fourth spot and Laura Hanlon (Fuji) slotted into the final podium spot.

More than any other race on the schedule, the masters elite was truly a showdown for the leader jersey. Dave Weaver (ALAN) spent a second straight day at the front of the field taking the victory by 25 seconds over the always strong Blair Saunders (Ben’s Performance Bikes). Paul Rades (GamJams), coming back strong after a rib injury at DCCX, held off a pair of heavy hitters to finish third.

The real race, however, was 30 seconds off the lead in fourth and fifth place. Before the weekend, Mike Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes) held a nine point lead over Kris Auer (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) in the Verge Sport leader jersey competition. At Schooley Mill, Auer finished third and Birner finished fifth. That gave Auer a one point lead over Birner and the jersey. In other words, whoever crossed the line first between these two riders would wear the jersey going into next week’s BikeReg.com MABRAcross finale.

The oft-repeated NASCAR adage “rubbing is racing” is not out of place in many cyclocross races, and never was that more on display than the battle that went down between Birner and Auer. There was contact in the sandpit, contact in the woods. These two were putting on the type of show that the jersey competition was created for. In the end, Birner was able to gain some ground over Auer, crossing the line in fourth place. Auer came across in fifth place knowing he would have to give back the jersey he had captured the day before. With only four points separating Birner and Auer, there is no doubt this battle will resume in Taneytown Sunday at high noon.

In the Masters 55+ race, Randall Root (Evolution) took a sabbatical from the elite masters race with one goal in mind: win the coveted date night from the Intercontinental Harbor Court Baltimore. This is the type of prize that is a bike racer’s dream. As cool as it may be, no spouse is impressed by a prize bag that contains a six pack of beer and some new socks. But come through that door with a one-night stay at a five-star hotel and you may be able to race guilt free for an entire year.

Root successfully completed his mission, riding away from the 55+ field and securing the date night prize. Fred Wittwer (ALAN) came in second with Jim Bronson (Patapsco Bike and Sport) not far behind. Those two riders will also battle it out for the leaders jersey at the final race.

Rebecca Frederick (Kelly Benefit Strategies/LSV) put in a weekend’s worth of race organizing but saved just enough energy to win the Cat 3 Women race at Schooley Mill and Rockburn. Matt Carroll (Evolution) topped the Masters 3/4 field and Sean O’Donnell (TOMS Shoes) won the 3/4 event. Andrew Massomnneau (Winchester Wheelmen) won the Men’s Cat 4 race and Sarah Crosskey took home first place honors in the Women’s Cat 4.

The BikeReg.com MABRAcross series holds its final 2010 race next Sunday. The MABRAcross championship will take place in Taneytown, Md. More information can be found by following the links on the schedule at MABRAcross.org.

HIGHLAND, MARYLAND, November 20, 2010 — Schooley Mill Cross, now in its second year as part of the BikeReg.com MABRAcross series offered up racers a revamped course on the stellar equestrian grounds of this pristine Howard County park in Maryland. Last year’s course had been lauded by some for its attendance to the needs of so-called power riders. This year that characteristic was retained but the addition of three distinct technical course features helped neutralize the advantage of those big guns, though if those big guns are big enough they should still win!

Ground frost and cool air greeted the cat 4 registrants but by the time the elite races rolled out temperatures reached a balmy 55 degrees. For most of the day, conditions were dry and sunny with occasional strong gust of wind.

In the Kelly Benefit Strategies Elite Women’s 1/2 race every racer was guaranteed a podium spot. MABRAcross leader Patty Buerkle (Haymarket/SEAVS) took the holeshot and proceeded to ride away from a chasing Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) and Allyson Tufano (NVRC/Cardio Sports Lab). Riding smoothly and efficiently a dominant Buerkle had 12 seconds on the chasing duo at the end of lap one. Harlow led the chase with Tufano dangling for a spell but on lap 3 Harlow bobbled at the barriers and the NVRC/Cardio Sports Lab rider attacked with vigor to open a gap Harlow could not close. Buerkle rolled through the finish with authority for the win, followed by Tufano in second and Harlow in third.

The Kelly Benefit Strategies Elite men’s race saw 19 racers toe the line. John Minturn (AXA-CRCA) got the holeshot with Ryan DeWald (Haymarket / SEAVS) and Wes Schempf (C3—Athletes Serving Athletes) in tow. Lap one saw a group of six separate with Sam O’Keefe (C3—Athletes Serving Athletes) and Patrick Blair (Adventures for the Cure) trying desperately to hold on. In short order the 6 were away. Minturn, Schempf, DeWald, Adam Driscoll (Adventures for the Cure), Stephen Cummings (Haymarket / SEAVS) and MABRAcross leader Jared Nieters (Haymarket / SEAVS) worked back and forth to sort out the pecking order. DeWald played the role of instigator, attacking on every rise and charging up the start/finish strip each lap as if it was the last lap, leaving pain and confusion in his wake. On lap four this move stuck and the elastic snapped as DeWald moved away from Schempf and Nieters while Cummings, Minturn and Driscoll worked to reel in the chasing duo. With four laps remaining DeWald’s gap had grown to 27 seconds and the Schempf/Nieters tandem had been reeled in by Cummings and Minturn while Driscoll dangled a few feet behind. With two to go Nieters launched a vicious attack on the starting strip to shatter his group. It stuck as Schempf, Minturn and Cummings struggled. DeWald continued to power forward while Nieters flew solo behind. At the line it was DeWald for the win, followed by Nieters, Cummings, Minturn and Schempf.

In the Elite Masters Race Dave Weaver (ALAN) rode clear of the field on the first lap and stayed well away to win the day. Behind him a group of 10 rode their race contesting the last four spots on the podium and battling for series points. With only 19 points separating the top three series racers the pressure was on. The group of 10 stayed together through the mid-point of the race before it began to fracture. Paul Rades (GamJams/Pre-Reg.com p/b Cutaway Clothing) separated himself from the chase and rode clear. Behind him Kris Auer (C3—Athletes Serving Athletes) secured third while Jay Morali (C3—Athletes Serving Athletes) finished off a great day by out-maneuvering current series leader Michael Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes) at the line. Auer `s third place over Birner’s fifth place moved the Darth Vader clad C3 boss back into the series lead with only two MABRAcross races remaining.

As many of you may have heard, Brian Fouche (ABRT) suffered a serious medical event during the Elite Men’s race. Several racers, including some who were racing right behind Brian in the elite race, responded to render aid. Brian was transported to the hospital and is now much improved. In the words of Mike Hefner (ABRT) “Thank you to those who responded to Brian. You are Heroes”. ABRT will provide more information on how Brian is faring when it becomes available. We join all of the cyclocross and racing community in wishing Brian a speedy recovery.

The MABRAcross series holds its championship race next week. The Turkey Chase presented by T.E.A.M. Fuji takes place November 28 in Taneytown, Maryland. Check www.MABRAcross.org for more information and a link to the BikeReg.com registration page.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD., November 7, 2010 — As Joe Dombrowski (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) made his way through the final turns of his warm-up lap at the 2010 Tacchino Ciclocross he came upon a shocked announcer who informed the pre-race favorite that the men’s elite field had already started and the lead group was about two minutes up the road. Calm beyond his years, the 18year old Dombrowski began stripping off his extra gear as he rolled down to the start line. After a brief conversation with the officials, it was game on.

It’s not often you get to see a cyclocross race handicapped in this manner, but spotting the field over two minutes gave the spectators at the Ommegang/Duvel Pavilion, as well as those that lined the course, a cheering interest in seeing if or when Dombrowski would catch the leaders. The quick answer is he would, and it did not take long. As the laps ticked by and the crowd began timing the gaps, the over two minute gap was quickly reduced to one minute, then 30 seconds, then under ten.

Dombrowski eventually integrated into a small chasing pack with about three laps to go. He made quick work of that group and started tracking down race leader Greg Wittwer (ALAN) who was putting in a sensational effort at the front. Despite Wittwer’s display of power, even he knew what would inevitably happen. After a quick glance back as he passed through the finishing stretch with two laps to go, Wittwer shook his head a little because not 100 meters behind, Dombrowski was reeling him in. After taking the lead, Joey D continued his sustained effort, opening up a sizable gap on the elite field before coasting across the finish line.

Wittwer held off the chasers for a well-deserved second place. Jared Nieters (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) finished third and the Adventures for the Cure duo of Pat Blair and Adam Driscoll completed the men’s elite podium.

The 2010 Tacchino Women’s race played out at the front similar to the 2009 race. Diedre “Dee Dee” Winfield (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) went to the front early, opened up a sizable gap over the rest of the field, and cruised to an easy victory. Following Winfield across the line was current Verge Sport MABRAcross jersey holder, Patty Buerkle (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) and Erin Silliman (ALAN). Filling out the fourth and fifth steps on the podium were Katrina Dowidchuck (Team TBB) and Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes).

Rosaryville State Park, the Tachhino Ciclocross venue, is most frequented by two groups, mountain-bikers and equestrians. During course set-up on Saturday, a local hunt club was on the grounds with a dozen horses and a pack of dogs. Squadra Coppi team member Scott Thompson swears he was joking when he said that for Sunday’s races they were going to bring back the horses and dogs to hunt down slower riders. Evidently somebody didn’t get the joke as a riderless horse joined the 1/2/3 35+ race on the third lap, showing good form by working into a large chase group behind Thompson’s wheel, and ahead of race sponsor and Family Bike Shop owner Jon Seibold.

Fearing for the safety of the racers and the horse, the referees neutralized the race and restarted the field after the horse was caught and led away. The three leaders—Blair Saunders and Mike Birner of Ben’s Performance Bikes, and Chris Harshman of Annapolis Bike Racing Team, were given preferential starting positions and the remainder of the grid started in waves. Blair Saunders took up where he left off, powering away from the field, while Mike Birner held off a hard charging Glenn Turner (Human Zoom), which was good enough to earn Birner the Verge Sport MABRAcross series leader jersey. Chris Harshman and Kris Auer (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) rounded out the podium.

Along with the traditional categories found at most cross races, Tacchino Ciclocross also included events for single-speed and tandem races. Greg Capelle (Adventures for the Cure) took home the single-speed prize and the Adventures for the Cure team of Adam Driscoll and Pat Blair, known collectively as Padam Blairscoll, won its second tandem cross race to remain undefeated in the discipline. The tandem race is quickly becoming a favorite on the MABRAcross circuit and two more races—Rockburn and MABRAchamps—have made time in the schedule for the tandem class.

The prize slate was generous, with high quality swag going to many racers thanks to the generosity of Squadra Coppi’s race sponsors. Major sponsors included All Hail The Black Market.com, Duvel USA (which sponsored the masters racers, and provided swag to hundreds of other racers); and Conte’s Bikes of Arlington and Bethesda.

MABRAcross takes a short break next weekend. The next event is the Howard County Double Cross, which takes place November 20 and 21.

HUGHESVILLE, MD., October 30, 2010 — Haymarket Bicyles-SEAVS continued its domination of the top podium spot at BikeReg.com MABRAcross series races with several victories at Saturday’s All Hallows Cross. Race organizer Pax Velo offered Mid-Atlantic cyclocross racers a challenging course, and mother nature pitched in with a perfect day. In its second year, All Hallows Cross featured several course changes that resulted in raves from those in attendance. Highlights from last year’s race, the ride through the barn and the single track remained. These elements were complemented by two long twisty horse ring sand pits and a reworked front section that offered new opportunities for technical riders as well as those able to produce the big watts.

The men’s elite race was a clinic in teamwork. Verge Sport MABRAcross points leader Jared Nieters (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) and his teammate, multiple MABRAcross winner Joe Dombrowski, were clear favorites in the starting grid.

Nieters, for the second week in a row, went down hard in the first minute of the race and found himself chasing the leaders from the gun. Dombrowski, fully aware of Nieters’ plight went to the front and played the good teammate. He sat on wheels for part of the course and went to the front to slow down the pace at others. This tactic gave Nieters the time he needed to catch the leading group of five by the third lap of the race. As soon as Dombrowski saw that Nieters had established contact is was game on. The Haymarket pair rode away from the group and opened up a sizable gap in short order.

Nieters seemed perfectly content to let his teammate ride at the front for the remaining laps. Despite the crowd urging for the pair to sprint out the finish, Dombrowski powered through the final sand pit and took the win easily over Nieters who did not contest the finale.

Patrick Blair (Adventures for the Cure) put in a great ride to finish third on the day. Ryan McKinney (Clean Currents) finished fourth and Andrew Welch (Squadra Coppi) rounded out the podium in fifth.

In the women’s elite race, Patty Buerkle (Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS) successfully defended her Verge Sport leader jersey, outsprinting Julie “Cool” Kuliecza (ALAN) for the win. Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) finished third with Allyson Tufano (NVRC) and Lindsey Hillesheim (Squadra Coppi) completing the podium.

The master’s elite field offered spectators the most exciting race of the day. The field stayed largely intact for a good portion of the day with a group of 20 riders in the lead pack for the first half of the race. That group shrank to ten riders as the lap cards started counting down.

The leader of the race continually changed as different members of the ten man group took their shot at getting away. The only constant was the man sitting second wheel. Mike Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes) put together a tactically flawless race.

No matter who took the lead in the race, Birner was always second. In fact, he only led the race for about a tenth of a second or so, but that tenth of a second came as he crossed the finish line, and that’s all that counts.

Joe Lillibridge (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) took advantage of some confusion in the sand pit on the final lap and snuck by both Birner and Evan Ellicott (Bike Doctor) heading out of the horse ring and a turn away from the finish. At the time, it looked like a winning move, but Birner was able to open it up on the final stretch and pip Lillibridge at the line. Ellicott hung on for third followed by Brent Williamson (Rostello) and Ron Huebner (Evolution).

The BikeReg.com MABRAcross series stays in southern Maryland for Tacchino Ciclocross, which takes place November 7 at Rosaryville State Park.

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 22, 2010 — With over 700 registered riders, DCCX, race #5 in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, is one of the biggest shows in cyclocross the East Coast will see this year. It is also the battleground for several close Verge Sport MABRAcross leaders jersey competitions.

After looking through the crossresults.com rankings, poring over the crossresults.com race predictor data, and taking into consideration course conditions, weather, barometric pressure, astrology tables and a host of other factors, it’s not hard to conclude that the Masters 1/2/3 race is one to watch closely. Not only are all the top jersey contenders signed up for Sunday’s showdown at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, but the top five are separated by less than 45 points. Although we may not normally ask you to do any math, this one is pretty easy. A win gets you 60 points. That means any one of these top five guys could be pulling on the leader jersey at one of the biggest races they may attend all year.

Kris Auer (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) currently wears the jersey after consistent top finishes in all four BikeReg.com MABRAcross series races. Ron Huebner (Evolution), coming off a victory at Hyattsville CX and a strong showing at Granogue—where in Sunday’s race he finished just ahead of Auer, is only 16 points away from snatching the jersey off the C3 boss’ shoulders. Tied with Huebner for second place is Mike Birner (Ben’s Performance Bikes), who absent a rare subpar showing at the BCA Cyclocross Challenge would most certainly be wearing the jersey today. Randy Root slots in after Birner and teammate Huebner, 42 points behind the winner. Tied with Huebner is Yanni “Big Papa” Papadopoulos who returns to MABRAcross after a big win at the Winchester Apple Harvest Cross. Throw powerhouses Dave Weaver (ALAN) and Blair Saunders (Ben’s Performance Bikes) into the mix and this race is going to be fast and furious as these guys put everything on the line.

The other points competition we want to highlight this week is the Mens 3/4 field, which has turned into a battle between two guys—Sean O’Donnell (TOMS Shoes) and Adam Williams (Winchester Wheelmen)—who should not be long for their category. Current Verge Sport leader jersey wearer Rob Sheffield (NCVC) has already made the leap to the 1/2/3 field to battle it out with the big guns. After two wins and a second place in the 3/4 category, we are certain Rob will fare just fine with the big boys.

O’Donnell and Williams sit 34 points apart from each other and O’Donnell is just two points away from reclaiming the leader’s jersey. Williams, O’Donnell and Sheffield formed a three man group during the Hyattsville CX race that left the field behind. Adam and Sean will most definitely be keeping an eye out for each other and this will certainly produce one of those exciting “race within the race” situations.

Of course, the rider that will make the biggest leap in points—from tenth to around fourth after Sunday’s race—is DCCX co-promoter Matt Donhaue. According to the crossresults.com race predictor, Donahue is destined to win the 3/4 race. We understand that he hasn’t slept or trained much trying to make sure DCCX goes off without a hitch, but that doesn’t matter. Make sure you do Matty a favor and constantly remind him during his race that he is obligated to win.

Also worth noting is the speedy ascent of Laurel Larson (Syn-Fit), who will be racing the elite race after great success in the lower categories. Larsen’s success opens the door for the Women 3 field to battle it out for the top spot.

Finally, the team competition is really starting to hot up. C3-Athletes Serving Athletes currently holds a six point lead over Haymarket/SEAVS, with Adventures For The Cure not too far back in third. For DCCX, a little extra firepower will be rolling into town for the top squads. Dee Dee Winfield, Arley Kemmerer and Wes Schempf stand poised to have strong races for C3. Will the addition of Stephen “Steevo” Cummings to the dynamic duo of Jared Nieters and Joe Dombrowski be enough to give Haymarket the lead? Or is this the breakout race for Adam Driscoll and Pat Blair of AFC? It’s really hard to say. But one thing is certain, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun finding out.

MABRAcross looks forward to the big crowds, frites and cool beverages on Sunday and wishes everybody a hard, fast and safe race. For more information on the series visit MABRAcross.org. For current Verge Sport leaders jersey point totals and team standings visit crossresults.com.

HYATTSVILLE, MD, October 10, 2010 — In its second year, and first in the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, Hyattsville CX exceeded all expectations. Close to 400 racers enjoyed sunny skies, a festival environment, and lung searing, high-octane racing. Magruder Park in Hyattsville, Maryland, once again played host to a course that attracted the Mid-Atlantic’s speed freaks but still had enough tricky twists and turns to give the technical riders an equal shot at glory.

Although Route 1 Velo and Arrow Bicycle organize and promote Hyattsville CX, it could not exist without the support of the city. This race has been embraced by Hyattsville and touted as one of the city’s premier events. Its success is a great example of how sport and local government can benefit each other. In addition, as a result of Hyattsville CX’s success, Route 1 Velo will proudly present a check, expected to be more than $5000, to Special Olympics of Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Before getting to the highlights of the day, Route 1 Velo and Arrow Bicycle would also like to thank all of the racers that stayed late in the afternoon to participate in the parade lap with our Special Olympians. Racers from all categories and most of the elite men’s field participated in the parade lap, a positive memory that will definitely stay with these special athletes.

As for the racing at Hyattsville CX, it was fast. A couple twists and turns added to last year’s course made lap times a bit longer but did not make it hurt any less. Whether the spiral of death has a place on a cyclocross course is good conversation for discussion groups, but there is no doubt that everybody was looking forward to that feature at Hyattsville, if only to catch their breath for a second or two before getting right back on the gas.

In the elite fields Jared Nieters and Patty Buerkle continued their hot streaks, following up wins at last week’s MABRAcross race in Winchester with victories at Hyattsville. Both Buerkle and Nieters led from the gun and did not let up until coming across the line with significant gaps over their competitors. Nieters crossed the line in style giving spectators a clean view of his Verge Sport MABRAcross jersey while striking a convincing Captain Morgan’s pose. Buerkle also showed off the Verge Sport MABRAcross series jersey, but chose against emulating any pop culture icons.

Race favorite Joe Dombrowski suffered an early race mechanical after running into the barrier much to the amazement of the crowd in the Franklin’s Brewery beer garden. The impact bent Dombrowski’s brake post, which took him a minute or so to diagnose. After giving the field around a two minute head start, he finally was up and running again. The Haymarket Bicycles-SEAVS rider proceeded to put on a clinic in why you should never quit a race. Coming from dead last and two minutes down, Dombrowski methodically worked his way through the field. At the end of the day, he found himself on the podium in fifth place.

The most exciting race of the day happened in the Mens 3/4 race. Sean O’Donnell (TOMS Shoes p/b Kindhuman Sports) put his Verge Sport MABRAcross jersey on the line against two strong opponents, Rob Sheffield (NCVC) and Adam Williams (Winchester Wheelmen). The trio separated themselves from the field and stayed together until the last lap when O’Donnell and Sheffield were able to distance themselves from Williams. O’Donnell got stuck leading Sheffield through the last couple turns, which left him vulnerable in the wide open sprint. Sheffield took advantage of his second spot and pounced as the riders hit the finishing stretch securing the victory and the Verge Sport leader jersey.
